Before there was Single Ladies ...
There was Phenomenal Woman, by Dr. Maya Angelou. Pretty women wonder where my secret lies I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them  They think I’m telling lies.  I say,  It’s in the reach of my arms  The span of my hips,  The stride of my step,  The curl of my lips.  I’m a woman  Phenomenally.  Phenomenal woman,  That’s...

Fall from grace
The winning picture (that will probably appear as a thumbnail) In a surprising turn of events, I just found out I will be published in the June issue of Photographer’s Forum magazine, their college edition. They are making me pay $50 for the issue though, what kind of a deal is that? (It’s worth it.) According to Dylan, they do a really nice 6-color print job and there’s a bunch...

Sweet, not bittersweet
I’m the one on the right, trying to open my eyes against my fat cheeks. On Tuesday I will be flying out to New York to attend my grandma’s funeral. My emotions are conflicting. Part of me wants to stay positive, to just go on with my life and be the best that I can. At times I feel guilty for not feeling sadness, but the more I think about, the more I realize that I have very...

True colors
I don’t know what I like anymore. But these colors do feel me. In that yuppie Seattle earthy way. The project is subjective color, the colors that feel right to us. By the way, is anyone a little excited to hear what Kanye has to say at the benefit concert tomorrow night?

Some thing never change
I kind of cried a little bit when we were talking about past family circumstances in my photo class. And I was kind of really embarrassed.

Life in color
When I get nervous, my hands get clammy so any time I do anything where craft is being evaluated, I put on the rubbers. Rubber gloves, at least. Just wrapping up a painstaking project on values in a continuous black and white spectrum. I’m not sure if my eye is “trained,” or at least to the accuracy the professors expect. That’s all.

Life inside a 1x1 square
Arranging color wheels, to mostly disappointing reviews. Things are starting to pick up in classes. They tell us it’s to train our eyes but I see it as more of a right of passage. All the upperclassmen had to do it. Hours and hours spent painting gray swatches. I think I’m starting to see it.

Now hiring spring intern
There are so many minor things that I would rather not be doing right now. On a lighter note, just learned today that Hermann Zapf taught at CMU back when it was still Carnegie Institute of Technology. There is your fact of the day!

Today's Wiki
I’ve recently been obsessed with large systems that span multiple countries. This may or may not have been “inspired” by Modern Marvels on the History Channel (no shame, no shame). Fedex is one of those behemoth systems. And as an added bonus, it’s logo, designed by Landor Associates, is iconic in it’s simplicity and visual pun. Take a hint, UPS, you don’t...

Tunnel vision
Mark’s back (hopefully for good!) Classes started yesterday. Although my course load is lighter this semester, it already seems like the work load has tripled. Gone are the days when Dan Boyarski would give us a “break” for working so hard (bolding some words and adding some line spacing). So long! to browsing through the photo captions of the design history text book before...

Why I don't want to be a web designer
Here you go mom, take it away. After pulling out my teeth churning out the website for my mom’s restaurant, I realized how much I don’t enjoy web design. Wait no - what I don’t enjoy is the coding required to make a website. Unfortunately, I won’t have the luxury of simply “designing” a site for someone else to program in the future since more and more...

"Kerning what my mama gave me"
Finally getting around to doing more personal work. I had been meaning to rebrand my mom’s restaurant for a long time now but never really had to time sit down and work through it. So as a late Christmas present, I finally finished up the work. The old logo was hastily churned out by a local signage/printing company several years ago when we first opened because we didn’t have...
